Follow the orange signs to our pop up shop full of fresh wet walnuts and the best local produce. Plus in the Tasting Barn, our Coffee Shop will be serving up delicious tea and cake for hungry nutters.
Wet walnuts are a nutrition packed delicacy available only for a couple of weeks of the year. Softer, plumper and milkier than their dried Christmas counterparts, they are the perfect accompaniment to a glass of Dedham Vale Wine and a slice of fine cheese.
The walnut orchard was planted in 1935 and is a nationally important example of a mature walnut orchard featuring traditional East Anglian varieties including ‘Stutton Seedling’, ‘Bardwell’, ‘Stowlangtoft’ and ‘Champion of Ixworth’.
We took over management of the Boxted Walnut harvest three years ago and love learning about the history of this famous nuttery. Once gracing the tables of the Royal Palaces and sold at Fortnum & Mason, the nuts were also painstakingly cleaned and polished by workers to be presented with a glass of port at the gentlemen’s clubs in London.
Whilst wet walnuts make a delicious snack on their own, the softer texture makes the nuts perfect for baking or as a virtuous addition sprinkled over puddings and desserts.
Our pop up shop and café are open daily 10am – 4pm throughout the wet walnut season.
